Wheel
thrown and handbuilt forms symbolise
the nurturing influence of the sea and the sky ![]()
![]() "Cosmos" Artist's Statement about the work : I work with clay to
express my joy in living by the sea. My major interest in
ceramics is working with the ‘Naked Raku’ technique. Shapes
are created to provide me with a suitable ‘canvas’ on which
to use this dramatic process.
These enclosed hollow
forms are hand built using robust white clay. Several coats
of coloured terrasigilata are applied to the raw clay and
they are burnished to a soft sheen, inviting touch.
Following their first firing a layer of slip and a layer of
glaze are applied. Marks are vigorously incised and in a
second firing clay and fire interact in the Raku kiln. The
layers applied prior to this second firing peel off. Smoke
from the fire penetrates the incised lines and the smoke
softens the colours. It is the mystery and drama of the
combination of deliberate mark making and chance smoked
penetration that inspires and enthrals me.

To present Summer Mementos I have worked with long-time friends Annie Matheson and Robyn Simon. Although producing paintings and pots has been a solitary activity we have met regularly to prepare for this exhibition. We have laughed a lot, shared personal reflections and reaffirmed the joy of women working collaboratively. Summer Mementos is a celebration of our love of shape, line and light. But it is our passion for colour which has bound us together for this presentation.
I have chosen a round, puffed female shape and employed naked raku techniques to smoke fire the work. This shape offers both interior and exterior surfaces upon which I have used lines to create my story.
The forms are hand built using a robust white clay. Several coats of coloured terrasigilata are applied to the raw clay and they are burnished to a soft sheen, inviting touch. Following their first firing a layer of slip and a layer of glaze are applied. Marks are vigorously incised and in this second firing clay and fire interact in the Raku kiln. The layers applied prior to this second firing peel off. Smoke from the fire penetrates the incised lines and the smoke softens the colours. It is the mystery and drama of the combination of deliberate mark making and chance smoked marks which inspires and enthrals me.
Working with raku fired forms provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on the unique influences on my life. To employ naked raku techniques the potter must remain open to the excitement, immediacy and unpredictability of raku. Although softly coloured and having an ethereal air the sculptures pass through many violent stages in which beating, fire, thermal shock, immersion in water and vigorous scraping combine to produce pots of strength and vitality
